Many things strike me about this show as a first time viewer, including its candid, important, and often uncomfortable discussions of race and racism, including but not limited to interracial dating, in a network landscape currently dominated by problematic post-racial fantasies. But the topic of this post is another phenomenal facet of FNL, which is the wonderful, nuanced, complicated, and dynamic female characters. I am blown away by the women of FNL, whom I did not expect to encounter in a show dedicated to the male-driven world of Texas football.
Saracen, Waverly, Julie, Devon, and even Lila, to just name a few. Recently, Sarah T. So here I want to highlight why Tyra, Waverly, Mrs. Saracen, and Corrina Williams my favorite are a particularly refreshing escape from a network landscape too oft-populated by post-racial fantasies and one-dimensional women. Landry and Tyra Adrianne Palicki have a heart to heart. Throughout the show, we see Tyra struggle as she falls in love with Landry, the most wonderful and smart and awkward kid in school who, not to give too much away, also saves her life.
Landry sees that she is is strong, smart, and capable in a way that she does not see or value. However, at times she is selfish and frustrating, but that is part of what makes her great which Landry points out to her.

Friday Night Lights was all about separations this week. No explanation. Racial tension arose when her parents said they wished Smash would stop dating their daughter, and those tensions further separated the couple after Smash got into a fight with a racist white boy while on a movie date. I’m not sure what this storyline accomplished besides having Matt lose his virginity. At least we got a scene between Matt and Landry here, though it was a reminder of how bizarrely out of touch they’ve been on the huge events going on in each others lives of late. More of a mixed bag was the growing problems Smash and Noelle were facing from outside forces.
Smash and his whole family went over to dinner at Noelle’s only for her parents to spring a big surprise, as they made it clear that they thought Smash and Noelle’s interracial romance was… problematic. And Smash’s mom Corinna in fact said she agreed with them, which was a well done gut punch to Smash. While this scene was strong, it was followed by a way too blunt one in which Smash and his little sister met up with Noelle at a movie theater, where wouldn’t you know it, they were viewed with scornful glances.
